I'm guessing you haven't seen the Life Aquatic, yet. This is better than the real trailer.
The pirates fictional and real are back. The biggest problem area in the 1990's used to be off of Indonesia, in a place called the Straight of Malacca. It was a serious enough issue that people were running debate arguments in 1993 on the South Asia topic on arrrgh pirates (as well as intellectual pirates.)
It fits right well into the post Cold War paradigm of having to expend more of the energies of Empire engaging non state actors. (I would have gone entities for actors, but I dread unnecessary alliteration, it undermines substance.)
